UL, ETL, DLC, and IP:
Four Lighting Labels, Four Questions
Stop reading commercial-lighting marks as interchangeable badges. Match each one to the exact model, database, document, and project question it can actually answer.
A commercial-lighting product page can show ETL, DLC, IP66, and “wet location” within a few lines. That does not mean four organizations approved the same thing. It means the fixture is being described through four different questions.
Here is the short version:

The practical move is not to collect the largest number of badges. It is to match each project question to the right mark, database, document, and exact model number.
1. UL and ETL: Start with the Standard, Not a Logo Contest
UL and Intertek are both recognized in the United States as Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories, or NRTLs. OSHA explains that each NRTL has a recognized scope of test standards and uses its own certification mark to identify products it has tested and certified to applicable product-safety standards.
That distinction matters because the laboratory and the standard are not the same thing. A luminaire may be ETL Listed to a UL standard. Intertek states that products bearing the ETL Listed Mark are tested to the same product-safety standards used by other certification bodies; the testing laboratory is different, not necessarily the safety requirement.
For a buyer, estimator, or submittal reviewer, “UL or ETL?” is therefore only the first pass. The useful follow-up is:
- What is the exact manufacturer and model?
- Which mark appears on the product or controlled documentation?
- Is the mark for the United States, Canada, or both?
- What product category and applicable standard are identified?
- Can the listing be matched in the laboratory's certification directory?
A safety mark also does not approve an installation in the abstract. Instructions, location markings, product options, field conditions, adopted requirements, and the authority having jurisdiction still matter.
2. DLC: Check a Live Qualification, Not an Old Badge
The DesignLights Consortium's Solid-State Lighting Qualified Products List is a commercial-lighting performance resource used by many efficiency programs. It is not an electrical-safety certification and it is not a universal promise that a utility will issue a rebate.
The word current does important work here. DLC listings can change. During the SSL V6.0 and LUNA V2.0 transition, the DLC began accepting V6.0 applications on January 5, 2026. Its June 2026 manufacturer guidance says products not listed to the new requirements are scheduled to be delisted on December 15, 2026. The DLC's own communication guidance tells buyers and programs to verify listing status when an incentive application is submitted because delisted products may not remain eligible.
That creates a simple buying rule: do not treat a storefront tag, an old specification sheet, or a saved QPL printout as permanent proof. Search the exact model in the current QPL, capture the relevant listing details, and then confirm the serving utility's current program rules, dates, and required documents.
DLC Premium is also a specific classification, not a decorative adjective. Record it only when the exact current listing supports it.
3. IP: Two Digits, Two Ingress Questions
An IP designation comes from the IEC 60529 system. NEMA summarizes the structure this way: the first characteristic numeral addresses access by people and ingress of solid foreign objects; the second addresses harmful ingress of water.
That makes an IP rating useful, but narrower than many product-page shortcuts imply. It does not describe every environmental hazard. NEMA notes that its enclosure types can include additional conditions such as corrosion, icing, oil, and coolants, and that IP ratings cannot be exactly equated with NEMA enclosure types.
The scope of the rating matters too. Ask whether the rating applies to the complete luminaire in its installed configuration or to a component. Cable entries, fittings, open knockouts, accessories, mounting, and installation steps can affect the finished assembly. Do not carry one component's rating over to an entire installation without documentation.
So when you see IP66, do not mentally translate it into “approved everywhere wet.” Read the two-digit claim, identify the rated assembly, and keep the separate location and installation questions open.
4. Dry, Damp, and Wet: Read the Location Statement
Outdoor and washdown-adjacent applications introduce another layer. UL Solutions notes that line-voltage outdoor luminaires evaluated to UL 1598 include applicable wet-location requirements; the same luminaires may also be evaluated separately for an IP rating.
That is the key: wet-location evaluation and IP testing can sit on the same spec sheet, but they are not duplicate language. One does not erase the need to read the other.
Before ordering, match the exact luminaire and instructions to the actual location. Consider exposure direction, mounting orientation, ambient temperature, chemicals or corrosive conditions, and whether all required gaskets, hubs, fittings, and accessories are part of the documented configuration. Where project or code interpretation is involved, the qualified installer, design professional, utility program, and authority having jurisdiction should make the final determination.
Read One Product Row Four Different Ways

Consider Michelon SKU HY-4FT-VT-H-3W3CCT, a four-foot Honya vapor-tight fixture. Michelon's current product page identifies the exact SKU and displays DLC, ETL, IP66, and a wet-location application. Honya's specification-sheet library links the same model family to a manufacturer document.
That row is useful because it creates four separate verification tasks:
- ETL: Match the exact model and certification details in Intertek's directory and controlled product documentation.
- DLC: Search the exact model in the live SSL QPL. Record current status and classification, then check the serving utility's program.
- IP66: Confirm that the manufacturer document applies the rating to the intended model and configuration. Do not convert it casually to a NEMA type.
- Wet location: Confirm the luminaire's location marking and installation instructions for the proposed mounting and exposure.
The product page starts the review. It does not replace the listing database, specification sheet, installation instructions, project documents, or final field determination.
The Five-Line Check Before a Purchase Order
Put these five lines in the quote file or submittal log:
- Identity: manufacturer, full model, Michelon SKU, selected options, and quantity.
- Safety: certification mark, country identifier, applicable standard/category, and directory evidence.
- Performance program: current DLC QPL status and classification, plus utility-program requirements if an incentive matters.
- Environment: IP rating, dry/damp/wet statement, rated assembly, and any installation limitations.
- Documents: specification sheet and instructions with source URL and retrieval date.
If one line is missing, the answer is not “probably fine.” The answer is a precise question for the supplier, manufacturer, program administrator, design team, installer, or AHJ.
